Stefan Groothuis gave Netherlands its fourth gold medal from five speed skating events at Sochi 2014 whe he won the men's 1000m on Wednesday night. After five days of competition, the Dutch have matched their Vancouver 2010 gold medal haul and surpassed their tally of total medals from four years ago.
The Dutch are one gold medal and one medal of any kind away from equalling their record hauls in both respects. Netherlands won five gold medals and 11 medals in total at Nagano 1998. They now have four gold medals and 10 in total.
Groothuis joins Ids Postma (Netherlands) and Gerard Van Velde (Netherlands) as Dutch winners of the Olympic men's 1000m.
In taking the silver in the 1000m, Denny Morrison (Canada) claimed his third career Olympic medal and his first in an individual event.
1000m bronze medallist Michel Mulder (Netherlands) becomes the first multi-medallist at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games. Earlier, he won the gold medal in the men's 2x500m.
